e-learning

Refers to technology facilitated learning. This can include distance learning via online platforms. Also related to the provision of online courses known as MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course).

Description provided by Hugh Davis:

"Learning on-line at Scale. (MOOCs).   MOOCS allow very large classes (tens of thousands) to study University level courses. They have needed people to rethink traditional assumptions about what makes good education, and have provided excellent high quality experiences for many learners. However, solutions to feedback and assessment at scale are in their infancy."

Why is this area interesting and relevant to Web Science?

"If Web Science is the study of how the web changes the world, certainly MOOCS have been one of the most significant changes to education in recent years, and this has all become possible because of what can now be done with the Web and the increased bandwidth of the internet,"
